Italy
A.Milan To Ban Takeaway Food
The Italian city
of Milan wants to introduce a law to ban the sale of takeaway food after
midnight. The reason for this is to help local residents sleep. Many people
have complained to the local government about the noise on the streets at
night. There are often large and noisy groups of late-night revellers in
downtown Milan. Local officials have decided to ban all takeaway food and drink
in 12 districts of the city. Some of these areas are well known for their
"wild" nightlife. The takeaway ban means people would not be able to
buy pizza or ice cream after 12:30 a.m. on weekdays and after 1:30 a.m. at
weekends and on public holidays. It would come into effect from mid-May and
last until November.
Milan's deputy mayor explained why the ban was important. He said: "The
goal is to seek a balance between socialising and entertainment, and the peace
and tranquillity of residents." However, there are also many people who
oppose the ban. A spokesperson for an Italian retail association said the ban
on post-midnight food and drink would not stop the noise. He said: "A rule
banning people from drinking a bottle of water or eating an ice cream or pizza
while taking a stroll…won't solve a thing, as people will still stay
outside." He asked: "Do you think a 25-year-old is going to go home
at the stroke of midnight simply because they can't get a takeout?" He
added: "What about tourists who want to eat ice cream?"
Similarly, the
huge surge in the popularity of online shopping is creating chaos on the
streets of our cities and on our road networks. As the number of online
deliveries is skyrocketing, the number of delivery trucks making sure we get
our parcels has also increased. The result is that hundreds more trucks are
clogging up city streets. This is increasing congestion and adding to levels of
pollution. There are literally hundreds more delivery trucks in cities around
the world all trying to get parcels delivered on time. Delivery drivers are
battling for often non-existent parking spaces. Many are forced to park illegally,
or double park, adding to the gridlock for other road users. And the problem is
set to intensify.
The BBC reports
that the volume of parcel deliveries surged by almost 50 per cent between 2014
and 2016. It said this could continue to increase by up to 28 per cent a year
over the next three years. Many cities have taken tough measures to counteract
the problems associated with the increasing number of deliveries. Many cities
in Europe and Asia have barred deliveries during times when roads are busiest.
London is looking at the possibility of using buses for parcel deliveries. Some
areas of London are also cracking down on food delivery motorbikes after their
streets were being 'swarmed' by scooter riders. Food delivery companies in one
London district must now apply for permission to operate.

B. Pizza to help
relationship break-ups on Valentine's Day
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w6r9m5PbZo
When we think of
Valentine's Day, we think of romance. Images of red roses, pink hearts and
candlelit dinners come to our minds. We rarely envisage breaking
up with our partner. However, restaurant chain Pizza Hut is selling a Valentine's pizza for those who want to ditch their
better half. Pizza Hut is selling "Hot Honey Goodbye Pies" in New York, Chicago
and Miami. Pizza Hut will write the name of your soon-to-be ex on
the box of the pizza. For those who live elsewhere, Pizza Hut has
an online service to aid the break-up. Customers can go to the GoodbyePies.com
website to send a break-up message, along with a link for the
"future-ex" to receive a complimentary pizza to help
them get over being dumped.
Pizza Hut's goodbye pie pizzas are a blend of sweet and spicy
flavours. The company's chief marketing officer said: "With the launch of
Goodbye Pies, we are bringing that perfect blend of sweet and heat…to real
life. We are delivering spicy news in the sweetest way for Valentine's
Day." The company's website said: "Break-ups are awkward.
We can help. Send a free…Goodbye Pie from now through Valentine's Day, and the
delivery driver will deliver the bad news in the best way." It added:
"We'll generate an expertly crafted, carefully curated,
and potentially plausible break-up excuse for
you." A YouGov poll stated that 45 per cent of people believe it is best
to end a relationship before February 14.

C. Venice wants to charge tourists to enter the city
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1PUnxVj0TI
Venice, Italy is one of the world's top tourist destinations. Before the coronavirus pandemic, around 20 million visitors a year visited the city. This caused many problems such as pollution from cruise ships and overcrowding. To deal with these problems, city officials are planning to charge tourists to visit the city's historical centre and its beautiful canals. According to Italy's La Stampa newspaper, entry into Venice could cost between three euros ($3.50) and 10 euros. This could start from the summer of 2022. There are also plans to set a limit on the number of visitors who can enter the centre each day. Tourists may need to book their visit to Venice before they go.
Venice officials have talked for many years about the number of visitors flocking to the city. Environmentalists are worried about the damage cruise ships do to marine life in the Venice Lagoon. Heritage lovers want to protect Venice's famous squares and architecture from the millions of tourists. This made Italy's Culture Minister say that there is a "concrete risk" of the United Nations culture agency UNESCO adding Venice to its list of World Heritage in Danger sites. However, a hotel worker said Venice needed cruise ships. He said: "They spend big in a short time, before sailing out." A city official is worried that charging tourists a fee to enter will turn Venice into a "theme park".

D. Japanese tourists call police over rip-off restaurant bill
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7svao9AgpKM
Four Japanese tourists are very angry after a restaurant in Venice, Italy charged them €1,100 ($1,350) for a dinner of steak, fish and water. In fact, the four tourists say they were ripped off (overcharged) for their meal. The four diners are students and study in the city of Bologna. They were on a day trip to Venice and decided to have dinner at a restaurant near the world-famous St Mark's Square on Friday. As well as the police looking into this incident, the mayor of Venice has promised he would also take action. The mayor said: "If this disgraceful episode is confirmed, we'll do all we can to punish those responsible. We are for justice - always."
It is common for tourists to be overcharged anywhere in the world. Tourism groups in Venice are worried about the Japanese tourists saying they were ripped off. This is because there have been many similar cases recently of rip-off prices in Venice. One tourism group tweeted: "Whoever puts the good name of Venice at risk, harms all Venetians." The restaurant has a very low 1.5 (out of 5) rating on the website TripAdvisor.com. A huge 83 per cent of visitors gave it a "Terrible" rating. One TripAdvisor user complained that: "The food was very average....They added almost €50 in taxes and a tip - these are the hidden fees that they don't tell you about. And the service wasn't that good. I feel scammed."

E. Homes for sale in Italy for one euro
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1DiGSrMtz4
It sounds like a dream come true for anyone looking to get on the property ladder - a home for one euro (about $1.14). A picturesque town on the island of Sicily, Italy is selling houses for just €1. The bargain price is to attract people to move to the hilltop town of Sambuca because of a rapid decline in its population. Like many rural towns in Italy, the number of Sambuca's residents is dwindling because many young people are moving to cities. The Sambuca mayor believes the houses will be easy to sell because his town is so attractive. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, is close to gorgeous beaches and has retained its heritage with its cobbled streets and Arabesque architecture.
Like all bargains, there is a small catch to the one-euro houses - the buyer must promise to spend $17,000 on renovating the property within three years of purchasing it. Sambuca's deputy mayor said the houses are owned by the town, so there is little of the red tape normally associated with buying a property. He said: "We're not intermediaries who liaise between old and new owners. You want that house, you'll get it in no time." He promised potential buyers would love the town. He said: "This fertile patch of land is dubbed the "Earthly Paradise". We're located inside a natural reserve, packed with history. Gorgeous beaches, woods and mountains surround us. It's silent and peaceful - an idyllic retreat for a detox stay."

F. Rome's Colosseum to get new hi-tech floor
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWi4kR5Pa5g
Italy's government has given the green light for the refurbishment of Rome's famous ancient Colosseum. The Colosseum is one of the world's most iconic sites and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome and is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built. It was completed over two millennia ago in AD 80. The plans will see the monument fitted with a new floor that will allow visitors the chance to stand where Roman gladiators once fought for their lives. Gladiators were used to entertain audiences during the Roman Empire by fighting to the death with swords against other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals.
Italy's Culture Minister Dario Franceschini announced the high-tech project and said it would open to the public by 2023. It is projected to cost around 18.5 million euro, or $22.2 million. The Colosseum currently has no floor. Archaeologists removed the original floor in the 19th Century to expose the structure's network of underground tunnels. Mr Franceschini said the new floor would be "extraordinary" and would allow visitors to see "the majesty of the Colosseum" from its centre. He added: "It's another step forward toward rebuilding the arena. It is an ambitious project that will aid the conservation of the archaeological structures while getting back to the original image of the Colosseum."

The American R&B singer Akon has said his plans to build a city from scratch will go ahead. Akon has raised funds for a futuristic metropolis with a population of 300,000 people. It will be called Akon City and be built on the coast of Senegal on Africa's west coast. Akon has Senegalese roots. He was born in the USA to Senegalese parents and spent much of his childhood in Africa. He described his city as a "real-life Wakanda," in reference to the city in the movie "Black Panther". He announced that construction on the $6 billion project will commence next year and is expected to take three years to complete. He hopes his undertaking will provide much-needed employment for the Senegalese.
Blueprints on the akoncity.com website show a cityscape of surreal-looking gleaming glass and steel high-rises. The designs of the towering were inspired by traditional sculptures made in African villages. The city will boast high-tech living and high-speed Internet connectivity. Akon wants the city to be a port of call for Senegalese and other Africans facing racial injustice in the USA or Europe. He said: "The system back home treats people unfairly, in so many different ways that you can never imagine. And they only go through it because they feel that there is no other way. So if you're coming from...the diaspora and you feel that you want to visit Africa, we want Senegal to be your first stop."

H. Huge rise in price of Premier League football shirts
Being a football fan in England is expensive. The cost
of going to a match is high. The price of football shirts also adds to the
expense of following your favourite team. The latest soccer jerseys for the top
English teams cost over $100. England's national team top for the Euros
tournament this summer cost over $160. Teams from England's Premier League are
cashing in on selling shirts. "The Sun," a UK newspaper, has revealed
that some teams have increased the cost by 56 per cent over the past five
years. A spokesperson for the London team Tottenham explained the high prices.
He said it was because of a rise in the price of manufacturing, materials and
shipping costs.
Consumer expert Jane Hawkes said the jerseys were overpriced and "not
remotely justifiable". She told The Sun: "This is an own goal by
mega-rich football clubs. Shirt prices have been soaring since the
[coronavirus] pandemic." She added that: "Pricing [shirts] out of the
reach of loyal fans in a cost-of-living crisis is unfair." She said it could
"backfire on clubs". Fans are unhappy with the increasing prices.
Manchester United fan Shane Hopkins was fed up with his team changing its kit
every year. He said: "Naturally, my children want the latest shirts. They
love their club. But that means I have to spend over $400 at the start of each
season. Clubs are too greedy."

of football shirts should be the same as
any other shirts; Students B strongly believe the opposite.

J. Saudi teen welcomed as refugee in Canada
Watch : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo23mvcsIc0
The teenage Saudi asylum seeker who fled Saudi Arabia two weeks ago has been granted asylum by Canada. Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, 18, arrived at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Saturday. She was greeted by Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, who told reporters: "This is a very brave new Canadian." She added: "Rahaf wanted Canadians to see that she has arrived at her new home. She has had a very long and tiring journey and so would prefer not to take questions today. And she is now going to go to her new home." Rahaf was all smiles as she was whisked through the airport wearing a hoodie emblazoned with the word "Canada".
Rahaf is fleeing alleged abuse by her family, whom she claims want to kill her. She was detained in Bangkok on January 6th while trying to board a flight to Australia, where she initially wanted to seek asylum. She appealed for help on Twitter and her plight gained worldwide attention. She was then granted refugee status by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Canada's decision to grant asylum to Rahaf could worsen relations between Canada and Saudi. Relations are already strained after Canada called for the release of a jailed Saudi human rights activist. Saudi suspended new trade with Canada, froze Saudi flights to and from Toronto, and cancelled scholarships for Saudi students in Canada.

The world's richest person, Elon Musk, has bought the social media site Twitter. Mr Musk bought the company for $44 billion. On April the 4th, he bought 9.1 per cent of Twitter for $2.64 billion. Twitter's value rose by 27 per cent after this. Musk then made a follow-up offer to buy the whole company, but the board of directors rejected this. However, on April the 25th, the board publicly accepted Mr Musk's offer. Musk is number seven on the list of Twitter's most-followed people. He has 84 million followers. Former U.S. President Barack Obama tops the list with 131 million followers. Twitter's co-founder Jack Dorsey said he was happy that Mr Musk is Twitter's new owner. He said: "I trust his mission."
Mr Musk said he wants to open up Twitter more to free speech. One of his biggest aims is to remove spam bots, which fill Twitter with fake tweets. Many spam bots are used to tweet false information to people voting in elections. They are also used to spread conspiracy theories about vaccinations, immigration and other social issues. Mr Musk said he wants to introduce new products. He said the company has "tremendous potential". One big question people are asking is whether Musk will allow former U.S. President Donald Trump back on the platform. He was banned in January 2021. Other concerns people have are about hate speech. Human rights groups say a more open Twitter could lead to a rise in hate.
Musk was the recipient of the TIME Person of the Year award for 2021. TIME's editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal explained why. He wrote: "Person of the Year is a marker of influence. Few individuals have had more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and potentially, life off Earth too." He added: "In 2021, Musk emerged not just as the world's richest person, but also as perhaps the richest example of a massive shift in our society." The groundbreaking entrepreneur is worth more than $255 billion. He is arguably the richest person in history. Many of his supporters claim that he is helping to save our world and our future by leading efforts to explore space and get to Mars.
The year 2021 was an amazing one for Elon Musk. He went into space in his own rocket. It was made by his company SpaceX. This is a pioneer in space tourism. It might enable us to travel to Mars. Mr Musk is also well known for his car company Tesla. This controls two-thirds of the multi-billion-dollar electric car market. It is valued at around $1 trillion. Musk is also an engineer, inventor and a trailblazer in many other cutting-edge industries. He first made his name by co-founding the e-payments company PayPal. Today, he is a leading player in robotics, solar technology, crypto-currency, artificial intelligence, super-speed public transport and most recently, the new owner of Twitter. TIME called him a genius and a visionary.

People around the world are trying to get hold of clothes worn by characters in the hugely popular South Korean TV series "Squid Game". In particular, the "Made in Korea" green tracksuits and pink jumpsuits from the show are in huge demand as a Halloween costume. Internet stores worldwide have been flooded with orders. Garment factories in South Korea are struggling to make enough of the clothes to keep up with demand. Clothes factory owner Kim Jin-ja from Seoul said: "October is usually a slow month for the sewing industry, but thanks to Squid Game and Halloween, we are scrambling to sew enough clothes." She added: "We are now sewing 6,000 green tracksuits for toddlers and children."
Squid Game is a survival drama series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. It was first broadcast on Netflix on September the 17th. It has since become a global hit and is Netflix's most watched series ever. It reached number one in 90 countries, including the United States. Netflix estimated that over 142 million people watched Squid Game in the 28 days following its release. The series is about a contest between 456 players who are in a lot of debt. They all play children's games to try to win a $40 million prize to get out of debt. However, the simple games could result in their death. Squid Game is another example of South Korean culture becoming popular around the world, following K-pop and K-dramas.

Tom Cruise's latest blockbuster film has broken box office records across America. The movie "Top Gun: Maverick" was shown in the biggest ever number of North American movie theatres. The movie magazine "Variety" reported that 4,732 cinemas in the USA and Canada showed "Maverick". This makes it the widest release of all time. The movie also broke another record. It is the best Memorial Day opening film in history. It earned $156 million in the USA. This beats Johnny Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End". That movie earned $153 million in 2007. Maverick has also given Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise his first ever $100 million opening weekend at the box office.
Maverick is the sequel to the 1986 film "Top Gun". Cruise goes back to his role as US navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The movie's production company Paramount was very happy that "Maverick" had done so well. Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution, said: "These results are ridiculously, over-the-top fantastic. I'm happy for everyone. I'm happy for the company, for Tom, and for the filmmakers." The movie has had rave reviews from critics. The "Independent" in the UK called it a "thrilling" blockbuster. Another UK newspaper, "The Telegraph," called it "absurdly exciting," and "unquestionably the best studio action film in years". At first, Cruise did not want to make the sequel. Now, he is happy he did.
He has also surpassed Johnny Depp as the most bankable actor in Hollywood. Depp has recently struggled with personal and financial issues. He has just won a lawsuit againt his ex wife actress Amber Heard. He is hoping that this will result in him making a much expected Hollywood xxxxxxxx.

M. THE WORLD'S FIRST ETHICAL SMARTPHONE
Watch:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_woVRab9eIg
Most of us have felt the exasperation of feeling helpless when our smartphone breaks. Phone manufacturers seem to go to extraordinary lengths to deter consumers from opening the back of their phones to try DIY repairs. Help is at hand. Fairphone is a new company that has produced a self-repairable mobile phone. The founder is Bas van Abel, a Dutch design engineer who set out to make "the world's first ethical smartphone". He started his company in 2013 with four basic principles. First, he wanted to use raw materials from non-conflict mining areas. He also wanted to make a product that was recyclable, durable and repairable. The new Fairphone embodies these aims.
The Fairphone website outlines the philosophy that underpins the company. It says its mission is to motivate "a massive industry to take responsibility for its impact on the world, by establishing a viable market for ethical electronics". It highlights the fact that many workers who produce technology are working in unacceptable conditions. It also points out the, "staggering amount of waste the electronics industry generates". Finally, it says: "Communication technology is on track to account for 14 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions by 2040." The Fairphone comes with a screwdriver and is easily repairable. The plastic used is 40-per-cent recycled, and the minerals are ethically sourced.
