Barcelona’s taxi drivers were planning a “total shutdown” of the city to protest F.C. Barcelona’s upcoming sponsorship deal with Uber. The strike was to take place during a Champions League match, when thousands of fans were expected to fill the streets. The taxi drivers’ union, Élite Taxi, had argued that Uber represents deregulation, labor exploitation, and tax evasion, and had called it “a deal with criminals.”
They said the club, which has long represented Catalan identity and social justice, was betraying its core values by associating with such a company. Taxi services were planning to stop from 5 PM to 10 PM, with blockades around the Olympic Stadium and a march to Camp Nou offices.
However, after a meeting between Élite Taxi and Barça’s general director, Manel del Río, Élite Taxi has called off the protests. "Because of our love for Barça and this city, we are calling off all protests for the time being," said its spokesperson, Tito Álvarez.
Uber was banned in Spain in 2014 and then again in Barcelona in 2019 but the ban has been lifted since then.
The Creation of Uber
-
Founded in San Francisco in 2009 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick.
-
It started as UberCab, connecting riders and drivers through a smartphone app.
-
Its model disrupted traditional taxis by offering lower prices, cashless payments, and real-time tracking.
-
However, it has faced criticism worldwide for avoiding regulations, treating drivers as freelancers, and undermining local taxi industries.
The Creation of F.C. Barcelona
-
Founded in 1899 by Joan Gamper, a Swiss football enthusiast.
-
Motto: “Més que un club” — “More than a club.”
-
The club symbolizes Catalan pride, democracy, and resistance — especially during Franco’s dictatorship, when Catalan identity was suppressed.
-
Barça has always promoted values of community, equality, and social responsibility.
A Clash of Values
Élite Taxi argues that partnering with Uber contradicts Barça’s historic role as a defender of social justice.
They believe that a club symbolizing fair play and equality should not align with a company accused of unfair labor practices and corporate greed.
