Bad Bunny

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known as Bad Bunny, was born in 1994 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory. People there are U.S. citizens, but they cannot vote in presidential elections. This situation has influenced Bad Bunny’s identity and political ideas.

Before he became famous, he released music independently while working as a supermarket bagger. His early songs talked about daily life, unstable jobs, ambition, and frustration. His success happened at the same time as the global growth of reggaeton and Latin trap.

Reggaeton started in Puerto Rico in the 1990s. It was influenced by dancehall, hip-hop, and Caribbean rhythms. At first, the music was criminalized. Police raided clubs and there was censorship. Many people said reggaeton was a social threat. Later, it became a global cultural phenomenon.

Bad Bunny became one of the most successful artists in the world. His albums broke streaming records. However, he is not only famous for music. He often uses his platform to express political opinions.

He performed at the Super Bowl halftime show. The show was almost completely in Spanish and celebrated Latino culture and identity. Some people praised the performance. Others criticized it. U.S. President Donald Trump called it “terrible” and said it did not represent American values. This reaction created controversy and backlash.

Bad Bunny refuses to sing in English to gain acceptance. He believes Spanish is a global language. He rejects assimilation and wants to protect his cultural identity.

He has also criticized deportation and immigration policies. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) arrests and deports undocumented immigrants. Many immigrants live under surveillance and fear. Bad Bunny has shown solidarity with immigrant communities.

Latinos are an important part of the U.S. workforce. Many work in agriculture, construction, hospitality, healthcare, and service industries. These jobs are essential for the economy. Latino entrepreneurship is also growing and generating revenue.

Immigration is still a controversial issue. Some leaders say deportation protects jobs and national security. Others say mass deportation could cause a labor shortage and damage the economy. Deportation can also separate families.

In contrast, Spain is planning to regularize about 800,000 undocumented immigrants to respond to labor shortages and an aging population. This shows different political approaches to immigration.

Bad Bunny’s career shows that music can be entertainment, but also resistance and empowerment.
