Hero Boy

A 13-year-old Australian boy has been called a hero after a brave swim that saved his family. The boy, Austin Appelbee, and his family were on a beach holiday in Western Australia. They were kayaking and paddleboarding in shallow water when strong winds pushed them far from the shore. They ended up more than four kilometres away from land, and it was getting dark. Austin decided to kayak back to the beach to get help. However, the waves damaged his kayak, and it filled with water and turned over. He also lost an oar and realized he was in danger. He decided he had no other choice but to swim to shore. He swam through waters where sharks are often seen to get help.
Austin finally reached the beach and called for help. This started a big rescue operation. Coastguards found the boy’s mother and his two younger sisters. Austin said: “When I reached the beach, I fell down because I was so tired. Then I had to run two kilometres to find a phone.” Rescuers described his actions as “amazing”. One rescuer said Austin’s actions should be highly praised. He added that the teenager’s determination and bravery saved the lives of his mother and sisters. Austin’s mother, Joanne, 47, said: “The wind suddenly became stronger. We lost our oars and moved further away from the beach. It was a terrible experience. My son is my hero ! ”
