Glovo: From Startup to Global Controversy (April)

Glovo is a Spanish delivery company that has experienced rapid emergence and global expansion since its founding in Barcelona. Initially launched as a small startup, it quickly achieved dominance. It was founded in 2015 in Barcelona by Oscar Pierre. Initially, the idea was simple yet ambitious: allow users to order anything from their city and have it delivered quickly. This included food, groceries, pharmacy items, and even personal errands.

The company operates through a digital platform that connects customers, businesses, and freelance couriers. These couriers are considered independent workers rather than employees, which has led to significant controversy. Critics argue that this model allows the company to avoid legal responsibilities, raising concerns about exploitation and lack of worker protections.

From a business perspective, Glovo’s model offers clear benefits, such as scalability and reduced labor costs. However, there are also challenges, particularly regarding job security and income stability for couriers. While some workers appreciate the flexibility, others highlight the negative impact of unpredictable earnings and difficult working conditions.

Glovo generates revenue by charging commissions to partner businesses and delivery fees to customers. Its profit model relies heavily on high order volumes and partnerships with restaurants and retailers. These agreements can be beneficial for businesses, increasing visibility and sales, but they may also create dependency and reduce profit margins for smaller establishments.

Despite criticism, the company has had a positive impact in terms of convenience and economic activity. It has created thousands of opportunities for work and enabled businesses to reach a wider customer base. However, regulation in various countries has forced Glovo to reconsider its model.
