Ireland: Economic Transformation, Rich History and St. Patrick´s Day

When people think of Ireland, they picture green landscapes, festivals, and rich culture. However, in the 20th century, the country faced major challenges, including an agriculture-based economy, limited industry, and youth migration. From the 1990s onwards, the Celtic Tiger brought rapid economic growth.

This success was driven by several key factors. Strong investment in education created a skilled workforce, while low corporate tax attracted multinational companies. In addition, EU membership opened access to a large market, and improved infrastructure further supported growth.

As a result, many global companies established headquarters, particularly in Dublin. Tech firms such as Google, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft, along with pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, drive exports in areas such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, software, and finance. Meanwhile, imports include raw materials, machinery, energy, and consumer goods.

Despite this progress, challenges remain, including high housing costs, dependence on foreign companies, and volatile markets. Nevertheless, Ireland has shown strong resilience and a remarkable transformation into a modern economic hub.

Ireland’s history of hardship goes back further. The Great Irish Famine (1845–1852) caused mass death and migration after a potato disease destroyed the main crop. Around one million people died, and another million emigrated to countries such as the USA, Canada, and Australia, creating a global diaspora.

Despite these difficulties, Irish culture remained strong. Irish Gaelic, along with music, poetry, storytelling, and close communities, helped preserve identity and heritage around the world.

A key figure in Irish history is Saint Patrick. Born in Roman Britain, he was taken to Ireland in captivity, where he worked as a shepherd. After escaping, he later returned as a missionary to spread Christianity. According to legend, he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. He died on March 17 (around 461), a date now celebrated worldwide as Saint Patrick’s Day.

In Spain, Madrid hosts Ireland Week (March 10–17), featuring music, dance, literature, film, food, and sports. The main parade takes place on March 14 at 5 PM, running from Metrópolis to Plaza de España with around 1,200 participants and a tribute to U2. Meanwhile, Barcelona does not have an official parade, but many Irish pubs host events with live music. Key venues include The George Payne, Flaherty’s, The Old Irish Pub, Michael Collins, The Wild Rover, and Dunne’s Irish Bar.
