OpenAI´s Sora

Hollywood producer and actor Tyler Perry is worried that AI will cause job losses in the movie industry. He gave a personal example of how this is happening now. He said he had plans for an $800 million studio expansion. He has put the project on hold  until he sees what happens with AI. He thinks AI will have a gigantic impact on jobs. He told "The Hollywood Reporter" website about his worries, saying: "There's got to be some sort of regulations in order to protect us from AI. If not, I just don't see how we survive. All of that work is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I'm seeing. had heard it through the grapevine last year that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it's able to do. It's shocking to me."

Sora is a new tool that can generate videos up to a minute long. All the user has to do is type what they would like to see, and the software will create a video. It can also create a video from a photo. Sora has been named after the Japanese word for sky. The New York Times said this was to show the tool's "limitless creative potential". Tyler Perry said he understood how useful AI will be in film-making. However, he worries about job losses, specifically  for actors, editors, sound specialists and transporters.

He said the technology could make travelling to locations and building sets redundant: "I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me," he said.

Perry, who has starred in films such as Don't Look Up and Gone Girl, did say however that he had recently used AI on set to make himself older for a scene, which meant he avoided having to sit through hours of aging makeup.

AI is already on the minds of many in the industry and was one of the main sticking points during the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

Many writers were concerned about their jobs being taken by AI, while actors were worried that the technology could be used to replace them on set.

Despite an agreement being reached between studios and Hollywood workers, Perry said the whole industry needs to come together to protect people's livelihoods.

"It can't be one union fighting every contract every two or three years. I think that it has to be everybody, all involved in how do we protect the future of our industry because it is changing rapidly, right before our eyes," he said.
