US wants gamers to become air traffic controllers

The USA’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a recruitment campaign specifically targeting gamers. The agency is encouraging them to consider a career as air traffic controllers.

There is currently a significant shortage of workers in this sector, with the country needing at least 3,000 additional controllers. The government believes that individuals who are skilled at gaming may possess the abilities required to fill these vacancies.

Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, expressed support for the initiative. He stated that the union welcomes innovative strategies to expand the candidate pool, including reaching out to individuals with advanced skills such as gamers. However, he emphasized that all candidates must meet rigorous standards required for this safety-critical profession.

The campaign features a promotional video displaying an Xbox logo and explicitly addressing gamers. Its slogan reads: “You’ve been training for this. Become an air traffic controller. It’s not a game. It’s a career.”

The promo highlights both responsibility and reward, stating that controllers help keep millions of people safe each year while earning an enticing salary of around $155,000 annually.

US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy noted the importance of attracting a growing demographic of young adults who already possess many of the technical and cognitive skills needed for the role. Some current controllers have also pointed out that gaming can enhance abilities such as quick decision-making, sustained concentration, and managing complexity.
